Navigating Infant Nutrition: What Parents Should Know About Formula, Donor Milk, and Gut Health

For many moms—especially new moms, feeding isn’t as simple as we expect it to be. Whether it is due to supply issues, medical concerns, or lifestyle circumstances, some parents need to supplement with formula or consider donor milk. 

Unfortunately, most of us—especially new parents, don’t realize that infant formula may contain hidden toxins, and the options available to us in the United States are often limited.

As a mother, I have walked this path firsthand. My son, Kane, was born 10 weeks premature and spent six weeks in the NICU. He had a feeding tube, struggled with severe reflux, and had a dairy intolerance. 

During this time, I was instructed to use Enfamil, the formula the hospital provided. But Kane vomited almost every single day, sometimes choking in his sleep. His doctors told me that because he wasn’t losing weight, there was no need to change his formula. This did not seem right.

In the beginning, I didn’t question the ingredients in Enfamil much or consider that it might contain hidden toxins. I had asked his pediatrician about a few European formulas but they advised against it. Looking back, I wish I had done more research and made a change. 

Today, Kane still struggles with intestinal issues, appetite challenges, and stomach-related behavioral discomfort. I can’t help but wonder how different things might have been if I had known more about his nutrition options.

What is Really Inside Infant Formula?

Most parents assume that infant formula is highly regulated and safe. While regulations do exist, recent lawsuits and independent testing have revealed that many formulas contain heavy metals, processed sugars, industrial oils, and synthetic additives.

Formula Ingredients to Avoid

PFAS

A recent class-action lawsuit against Enfamil revealed the presence of organic fluorine, a marker for forever chemicals in the formulas. 

Heavy Metals

Another class-action lawsuit against Enfamil stated, “Enfamil ProSobee Soy Infant Formula was found to contain 6.2 parts per billion (ppb) of arsenic, 6.9 ppb of Cadmium and 7.8 ppb of lead, and Enfamil Infant Formula Milk-Based with Iron was found to contain 2.2 ppb of arsenic, 0.7 ppb of cadmium and 2 ppb of lead.”

Corn Syrup and Processed Sugars

Many formulas rely on corn syrup solids, which can impact blood sugar and gut health.

Industrial Seed Oils

Commonly used oils, such as soybean and palm oil, are highly processed and oxidized, contributing to inflammation.

Synthetic DHA and ARA

Often extracted with hexane (a chemical solvent), these ingredients mimic healthy fats but may contain chemical residues.

Sodium Selenate

A synthetic form of selenium, which in high doses can be toxic and has been linked to neurological concerns.

Ascorbyl Palmitate

A synthetic fat-soluble form of vitamin C that is produced using chemical processes, often containing residues from solvents.

Choline Chloride

Made using synthetic chemicals, including ethylene oxide, a known carcinogen, and trimethylamine, which can have neurotoxic effects.

Cyanocobalamin

A synthetic form of vitamin B12 that requires the body to detoxify cyanide before converting it into usable B12.

M-Inositol

A synthetically produced compound that is sometimes extracted using acid hydrolysis and other chemical methods.

Biotin

Often synthetically derived from petroleum-based processes.

What You Can Do

Not all parents have the luxury of choice. Some of us have to use formulas, whether we like it or not. In those cases, knowing which brands are better and what ingredients to avoid can help protect your baby’s health.

If you need to use a formula, consider these steps:

Research Your Options

Some formulas are cleaner than others in terms of ingredients, processing, and third-party testing.

Look for European Formulas

Many European brands ban corn syrup, soy, and synthetic preservatives and have stricter heavy metal testing.

Consider Goat Milk Formulas

If your baby struggles with cow’s milk, goat milk may be easier to digest.

Check for Third-Party Testing

Brands that test for heavy metals, pesticides, and toxins provide an extra layer of safety.

When Kane was in the NICU, I used donor milk but never asked about the source — I trusted the doctors and testing. Looking back, I wish I had asked more questions to ensure quality and safety. I also have friends who chose to share breastmilk with family or friends instead of using formula. This is a personal choice, but it’s important to be informed.
